Andrew's Story - Orlando

Starlight Child Andrew and His FamilyDavid and Rose of Orlando have three beautiful children, five-year-old Ryan and four-year-old twins Katelyn and Andrew. Andrew was born with spina bifida, hydrocephalus, clubfoot and severe scoliosis – which have required nine surgeries and continuous medical follow-up since his birth.

“The biggest issue for our family has been managing all the medical services Andrew needs along with coordinating care for our other children. At any one time, there are six to 10 doctors involved in his care. Honestly, this leaves us with very little time and energy for planning for and saving for a day of fun. Sometimes it feels as if we are the only family that is going through something like this – which is why we are so glad to have found Starlight.

“Starlight’s Great Escapes activities have introduced us to many other families in our community who are going through similar struggles. For Rose and me, it gives us a chance to speak with other parents and discuss issues – to let it all out instead of keeping our feelings and fears knotted up inside.

“For the kids, it’s been wonderful to see how Starlight makes sure every child feels special and included — whether they have a disability or not. Ryan and Katelyn have always treated Andrew just like any other child. At Starlight events, the same holds true of all the children – they are completely accepting of each other. No one is singled out as different and every child gets treated with class.

“Whether it be a simple afternoon building stuffed animals at the Build-A-Bear store, or a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get a behind-the-scenes tour of a massive cruise ship, Starlight has given our family many opportunities to make memories together. I’ll never forget my kids’ faces when they got up close to that cruise ship – they were awestruck! Starlight helps bring our entire family closer together because they include us all, and make it special for all of us.

“I’m proud to say that Pulte Homes, my employer, is supporting Starlight with proceeds from its annual golf tournament. Of course, I have a special place in my heart for Starlight because of all they’ve done for my family. Pulte is also very happy to be supporting families like mine throughout the Orlando community. As medical bills build up and doctors’ visits fill their days, Pulte hopes that its support of Starlight will give families a chance to escape from the world of medical treatments, and to bond, relax and have fun. It’s a fact that Starlight Great Escapes provide experiences for families to create happy memories that will last a lifetime. Pulte is proud to support such a worthy cause.”
