StarPower Ambassador 11-year-old Allen Alvarado shares a personal story with ‘A Stellar Night’ guests. He recently struggled through a life-threatening accident, when after being an ambassador for Starlight for some time, he experienced the benefits of one of the organization’s programs firsthand. While recovering in the hospital, Starlight’s Fun Center not only provided some much-needed distraction and entertainment, but actually assisted in the rehabilitation process.

Quotes

Allen Alvarado, StarPower Ambassador, Speaker at A Stellar Night 2008:

"Last March, I became a StarPower Ambassador and…got to meet a lot of the families and other kids at a bunch of really fun Great Escapes activities like bowling and Dodger clinics. Of course, when I was talking with Starlight kids about what it was like to live with a serious illness or injury, I never in a million years imagined I’d soon be in a hospital bed and that Starlight would be there for me. Last November, my dad and I got hit by a car when we were crossing the street. I was thrown 40 feet in the air, and rushed to the hospital with a brain injury. I couldn’t talk or move much at all for several days. I just didn’t feel up to doing anything at all. But, my dad says everything changed when the nurses brought in a Fun Center. He says that’s when I smiled for the first time. And I know why! Playing games made me forget for a little while about the pain. I couldn’t control the joystick by myself at first, but the nurses helped me and it got easier. I even got to use the Fun Center during my physical therapy."

Corbin Bleu, StarPower Ambassador, Host of A Stellar Night 2008:

"You know, all kids have dreams. Some of them are already seeing their dreams come true. Other kids, because they have a serious or chronic illness, or have a brother or sister who does, have to put their dreams on hold while illness grips the home."

David Brown, Starlight Dad, Speaker at A Stellar Night 2008 (read more family stories):

"My son Alex was in the hospital for two months, during which time he had multiple surgeries, treatments and therapies. When he woke up after his first surgery, it was as if he was a newborn all over again. Once Alex’s health began to improve, we attended our first Great Escapes. Now we go whenever we can and all of our kids look forward to them. They bring our family closer, simply by allowing us to set aside time to be together and forget, just for a little while, the treatments, therapies, surgeries, MRI’s, CT scans and worry associated with Alex’s illness. Without Starlight, there is no way we’d be able to afford or find the time to plan all of these wonderful family experiences. We also have the chance to meet other families in similar situations – maybe not dealing with the same illness -- but struggling with the same sorts of issues - concerns about care and dealings with physicians. Our children get to meet other siblings and develop friendships with similarly-situated kids who understand how they are feeling."

Brad Paisley, Presented 2008 Heart of Gold Award to the Shatners:

"The Heart of Gold Award is presented to individuals or couples who have a deep commitment to children and a generous heart. No words could better describe my very dear friends William and Elizabeth Shatner. Individually, each is exceptional, but together they’re unbeatable."

William Shatner, 2008 Heart of Gold Award recipient:

"Children touch our hearts because they are, essentially, helpless and need our strength and wisdom and sense of purpose. And many times, coincidentally, they give us that sense of purpose. It’s a symbiotic relationship and so it is with Starlight Starbright, fulfilling children’s needs. It’s really a divine purpose."
