Carina’s Story

CarinaMy daughter Carina was diagnosed with biliary atresia, which is a blockage of the tubes that carry fluids from the liver to the gallbladder, at just eight weeks old.

My husband Dave and I never imagined that after two healthy children, our third child would be born with a life-threatening illness. The normal life that we were accustomed to began to spin out of control very quickly after that.

At first, we were in denial about our situation. We kept thinking that Carina would be fine and that she would not need a liver transplant. When it finally settled in, we were full of fear and apprehension about our child’s odds. At the time, our older children were only four and seven, so they were unable to grasp the seriousness of the situation.

Carina’s illness has impacted our lives in a huge way, both emotionally as well as financially.  Thankfully, we have an extremely strong network of family and friends that continuously support us and who have been our angels on earth.

About five years ago, we were referred to Starlight through a child life specialist at CHOA Egleston. Our family has been apart of many fun events with Starlight. We’ve been to holiday parties. Lakeside picnics. Sports games. A Harlem Globetrotters show. The circus. Even a Great Escape with Versace.

Starlight’s  Great Escapes program has provided our family with many fun memories, and they have especially brought Carina much joy in allowing her to forget temporarily about her chronic illness. Starlight’s staff and activities always make her feel very special.

Thank you to all the sponsors who make Starlight possible. Your contributions make a big difference in our children’s lives.
