Meghan's story in the words of her mother...
"With nine doctors and eight surgeries, Meghan is always busy with medical appointments. The pseudotumor in her brain left her legally blind, so she is unable to drive or get around without falling or getting hurt. She has a lot of pain from a spinal condition, and high blood pressure and heart defects keep things complicated with her medicine and side effects.
We have four children in our family, and Meghan's condition takes a lot of time and attention. Meghan's younger brother, Andy, is severely autistic, so we all sacrifice our time and energy coping with disabilities in our family. Meghan's father left us the day she was born, so I am a single mother. The weight of responsibility rests on me alone.
Our entire family has enjoyed the activities with Starlight, but the best experience Meghan has had was probably prom. Meghan attempted to attend the Prom at her high school, but it was not a good experience. The other girls laughed at her and left her out to the point that she had to leave and come home just a few hours into the event.
The Starlight Prom was the exact opposite because it was one of the best nights of Meghan's life! Meghan and her date had the time of their lives; they dressed in their formal attire, danced and laughed, ate and took pictures, and just felt completely free to be exactly who they are with no one making fun or judging them.
Because of Starlight, we can take part in opportunities that would not be possible otherwise. Not having to worry about the cost of these events is a dream come true, and meeting and being around families we can relate to is very comforting. At Starlight events, the atmosphere is supportive and no one judges or picks on us. We are grateful for that freedom most of all! Whether it is with prom, cruise, or theatre events, Starlight allows us to have GREAT TIMES!!"
