Joan M. Steltmann
Ms. Steltmann was appointed as Executive Director of Starlight Midwest in September 2010. Under her leadership, Starlight grew over 40% in 2011, launched Starlight Escapes in two new states, and expanded inpatient programming amongst its 150+ hospital partners. Prior to joining Starlight, Joan served as VP, Enterprise Advancement for Lake Forest Graduate School of Management where she held P&L responsibility for Development, Governance, Alumni Relations, and Community Outreach. Joan has 16 years of experience in global marketing, e-business, strategic planning, business development, and finance with IBM. She has been cited in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and the Chicago Tribune. As Market Development Executive she was responsible for developing interactive, multi-media marketing campaigns targeted at strategic growth markets. Joan has been recognized as a Corporate Woman of Distinction by the Chicago chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners and was featured as Executive of the Month by Chicago Business Women magazine. An active community leader, Joan is Vice Chair of the Board for National Runaway Switchboard and chairs its Strategic Planning Committee. She is also past co-chair of the Women’s Board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois®, a former Director of the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce, a past member of the Donors Forum of Chicago Strategic Planning Committee. Joan earned an M.B.A. from Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University and a B.B.A. (highest honors) Ross School of Business Administration, University of Michigan.
Jason M. Baumann
Annual Giving Manager
Jason Baumann joined Starlight Midwest in October 2012 as Annual Giving Manager. He brings more than ten years of experience in development and fundraising and nearly ten years of experience in corporate marketing, communications and public relations. Previously, Jason worked for some of Chicago’s largest non-profits: Easter Seals Metropolitan Chicago; Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois; and Archdiocese of Chicago. Jason’s roles included annual giving, special events, communications, PR, technology and corporate partnerships. Jason’s business experience includes owning a web design & hosting/social media consulting company and a print communications firm that served clients across the US and Europe. He spent three years at Crain Communications and was appointed one of their first interactive/ online marketing professionals. Jason worked in marketing and public relations at Adventist Midwest Health where they rebranded the health system. In 2008, Jason dedicated his career to making a difference in the lives of children. He has served on the Catholic Charities of Chicago Marketing Advisory Board and was an inaugural member of the Young Professionals for both the American Committee for Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem and Easter Seals Metropolitan Chicago. He is an active volunteer for Make-A-Wish Foundation of Illinois, Cystic Fibrosis Center, Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Illinois, and National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Greater Illinois Chapter. Jason guest lectures at City College of Chicago/Harold Washington College on eMarketing, website design, and Social Media Integration. Born and raised in Chicago, he attended Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary and studied Clinical Psychology at the University of Illinois - Chicago.
Emily joined Starlight Midwest in July 2012 as Program Coordinator. Her prior experience as program area director at Double H Ranch, a summer camp for children with chronic illnesses, fuels her passion for Starlight’s mission. Emily also draws from her event marketing background with Marketing Werks, and her not-for-profit leadership perspective as a Board Member for Do Your P’Art Foundation, to bring both Starlight Escapes family programming and Starlight hospital partnership programming across the Midwest. Emily holds a BA from University of Vermont.
Development & Operations Coordinator
Brittany joined Starlight Midwest in January 2013 as the organization’s Development & Operations Coordinator. Her previous experience as a philanthropic consultant for nonprofit organizations, including Willow House, World Relief Chicago and Easter Seals of Metropolitan Chicago, fully prepared her for this role with Starlight. Brittany’s background as a volunteer for diverse youth-focused programs and agencies throughout Chicago drive her dedication to the nonprofit community, and more specifically, to Starlight’s mission. Brittany holds a BA from Northwestern University.
