Young Actress Bailee Madison Helps Starlight Children’s FoundationTM Kick Off 30th Anniversary Celebration with Starlight Day May 3

Friday May 3, 2013 (Los Angeles, CA) – Actress Bailee Madison, who appeared most recently in the movie “Parental Guidance” and stars as young Snow White on the hit ABC show “Once Upon a Time,” is expanding her role with Starlight Children’s FoundationTM by becoming a Starlight Ambassador and helping the organization kick off its 30th anniversary celebration with a variety of activities scheduled around Starlight Day on May 3.

Starlight Day’s captivating one-day Twitter campaign calls attention to the millions of hospitalized kids around the world and highlights Starlight’s role in partnering with hospitals to support these kids every day. Bailee was first inspired by Starlight’s work after attending the organization’s Los Angeles gala in 2008. Since then, she has appeared in public service announcements, attended hospital and community-based events and co-hosted Starlight’s annual gala, the very same event that first drew her to the cause.

“Through Starlight, I have learned firsthand that it’s not only the child that is affected by chronic illness, but the entire family. I am so excited to begin this next chapter as a Starlight Ambassador and to lead Starlight Day,” says Bailee, now 13 years old. “It's the perfect way to show how Starlight brings a sense of childhood to hospitalized kids every day.”

There are several ways that people can join Bailee in celebrating Starlight Day: • In the morning Bailee will make a special stop at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles where she will visit with kids who are hospitalized with serious or chronic illness. • At 4pm PST, fans will get the chance to Tweet questions to Bailee using #Starlight30 during a live Twitter Video Chat. To further her connection with kids impacted by Starlight’s programming, members of Starbright World™, Starlight’s online social network for teens with chronic illness and their teenage siblings, will also take part in the conversation.

Starlight’s Starlight Day Twitter campaign encourages people to join Starlight (@StarlightOnline) and Bailee (@BaileeMadison) in the conversation by Tweeting memories or photos of what reminds them of childhood using #Starlight30 and follow @StarlightOnline to join Starlight’s mission.

The Starlight Day Twitter campaign connects vivid images like Saturday morning cartoons and playing in the sprinklers - things that remind us of our own childhood - to how hospitalization and illness impact childhood for millions of kids every day.

“Bailee Madison’s genuine compassion for hospitalized children makes her a powerful spokesperson for this special awareness campaign. We are honored to have Bailee’s support for our mission and her leadership on Starlight Day.” says Jacqueline Hart-Ibrahim, Global CEO of Starlight Children’s Foundation.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human services, 3 million children are hospitalized in the U.S. every year. Many of these are repeat hospitalizations due to chronic illness.

Starlight supports hospitalized kids with programs in more than 1,750 health care facilities and every major pediatric hospital in Australia, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States, serving millions of children every year.

Starlight’s programs include the Starlight Fun Center™, mobile entertainment units containing the latest gaming system that roll bedside in hospitals to provide distractive entertainment and therapeutic play for pediatric patients, and Starlight Tablets, a critical resource for healthcare professionals to support the ongoing needs of kids while in the hospital. Starlight Tablets come loaded with links to Starlight’s educational programming and Starbright World, the first-ever online social network for teens with chronic and life-threatening medical conditions, and their siblings.

Northwestern Mutual Launches Digital Holiday Campaign to Fight Childhood Cancer

Share Unstoppable Happiness! inspired by child’s original artwork, brave spirit and holiday message of hope.

MILWAUKEE – December 3, 2012 — A child’s inspirational artwork for a holiday card will drive awareness, donations and hope in the fight against childhood cancer as the centerpiece of a new digital holiday campaign launching today by Northwestern Mutual. The campaign, Share Unstoppable Happiness!, aims to raise up to $25,000 by Dec. 30 for Northwestern Mutual’s Childhood Cancer Program nonprofit partners, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and Starlight Children’s Foundation.

“Unstoppable happiness is happiness that never ends all of your life,” said Addison, the courageous eight-year-old from Broomfield, Colo., fighting Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) who created the holiday card for the campaign. “I would be happy if cancer went away forever because then no one would have to go through what I’m going through.”

For each “share” this digital card receives, the Northwestern Mutual Foundation will donate $1 to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and Starlight Children’s Foundation. The nonprofit organizations are signature partners of Northwestern Mutual’s Childhood Cancer Program, a multi-year commitment to accelerate a cure for childhood cancer and to support families battling the disease.

Ten-year-old Kevin of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., and ten-year-old Zane of Upper Marlboro, Md. – who both battled and beat childhood cancer – share their unstoppable happiness alongside Addison in an inspirational video that is also featured as part of the Facebook campaign. The video encourages viewers to share the holiday card to support the fight against the disease.

“You can’t listen to Addison, Kevin and Zane’s optimism and bravery and not be inspired to do everything you can to fight for them and other kids battling cancer,” said John Kordsmeier, president of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. “By answering Addison’s plea to Share Unstoppable Happiness this holiday season, we can build awareness and provide support for the thousands of children and their families affected by childhood cancer.”

Share Unstoppable Happiness! launches just as Northwestern Mutual completes a series of donations to children’s hospitals across the country. The philanthropic activities, serving more than 5,000 children, are taking place in several cities including Milwaukee, Phoenix, Albuquerque, Miami and Los Angeles. Northwestern Mutual is delivering Starlight Fun Centers, mobile entertainment units, as well as hosting families at Starlight Great Escape events and launching the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation Family Travel Fund in select cities.

According to the National Cancer Institute, childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for children under 15 years of age. Further, a recent survey of 1,000 American adults, commissioned by Northwestern Mutual, revealed that the greatest perceived obstacles in curing childhood cancer are lack of research funds (60 percent of survey respondents) and lack of awareness (42 percent of survey respondents).
