 Radio Flyer, Inc. has been brightening hospital hallways with a donation of over 4,000 cherry red wagons to Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation over the years. Hospital personnel across the country use the classic wagons in place of wheelchairs or stretchers to transport younger patients to and from surgeries, hospital rooms, and playrooms.
Radio Flyer contacted Starlight in 2002 about the donation. The company knew hospitals were using wagons in pediatric units but was not sure how to deliver them free-of-charge. Starlight contacted its list of over 1,000 hospitals, making sure that the distribution of wagons met the needs of as many hospitals as possible.
"We're delighted that our wagons are being used in hospitals," said Robert Pasin, chief wagon officer at Radio Flyer, Inc. "The thank you notes we've received have been overwhelming and it's nice to know that we can at least make a small difference in the lives of so many kids."
"It is heartwarming to see our littlest kids transported in a fun, safe and comfortable wagon to their treatment rooms or simply on a ride to provide entertainment or distraction from their illness," said Ann Wellman, director of development at Memorial Hermann Woodlands Hospital in Woodlands, Texas.
"Our patients love being strolled around the hospital in a wagon," added Collette Rossi-Luebke, child life specialist at Rockford Memorial Hospital in Rockford, IL. "Their parents have been especially pleased by the ease and maneuverability it offers. We have found the children to be less stressed and more relaxed when brought to the operating room in a wagon instead of a cart."
