The Living With Kidney Disease™ online program was developed to help teens and pre-teens with kidney disease, ages 10 to 15, better understand their condition and cope with the challenges that accompany their illness. The program's goal is to encourage adherence and help teens have a positive outlook about their health and future.
Using graphics and animation, Living With Kidney Disease offers teens insight about:
- How the kidneys function
- What to expect from dialysis
- How diet, exercise and medications play a role in the health of someone with kidney disease
- How to prepare for a possible transplant
Living With Kidney Disease also helps teens find out how to lead an active lifestyle and make good choices when it comes to their health, by portraying the experiences of other teens with kidney disease in the informative "Ask Jim & Jenn" section.

Living with Kidney Disease is an interactive online game, which was developed as a tool for children to actively explore information about medical procedures and conditions in kid-friendly language. Children search for meaning about their illness from a very young age, and studies have shown that children who are provided with information cope more effectively than children who are protected from such knowledge. Interactive media can be helpful in conveying this information, as it provides a way for children to seek information at their own pace, see animations of what is happening in their body or what doctors learn from tests, hear the sounds of machines they will experience, learn from the experiences of peers, and learn coping strategies.
