The Power of Youth

Starlight's StarPower program was created to showcase the power of young people who engage in meaningful community service to help other kids.

StarPower participants:

  •  Use their own personal “star power” to brighten the lives of young people who are battling chronic illnesses, life-altering injuries and life-threatening diseases.
  •  Volunteer to help spread the word about Starlight and how others can reach out to help seriously ill children and their families. And, where appropriate,
  •  Organize and/or participate in fundraising efforts to help provide programs and services for Starlight families.

Adding More Star Power to a Universe of Caring

Starlight recently created Site of a Million Stars — an online universe that connects people of all ages who want to bring seriously ill children and their families out of the dark. By placing multi-colored stars in the universe, supporters worldwide have the opportunity to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families. Through StarPower, kids and teens can add their own personalized star to www.millionstars.org while giving a sick child a chance to do the same!  To find out how the StarPower program works, please download this overview

Spread the Word
: Once your school, youth group or other organization has decided to particiapte in StarPower, download this full-color 11x17 poster, and print it out to post it on your school, church, synagogue or community boards.

Earn Recognition: In acknowledgment of outstanding philanthropy, Starlight will reward any school or other group that returns 500 or more decorated postcards with a commemorative plaque.

Be Creative: Participating StarPower children and teens are encouraged to be as creative as they can to get more kids involved! Students have filmed and recorded commercials to air on their school’s morning announcements, created flyers for neighborhood families, partnered with local businesses to get the word out, and engaged in competitions with other schools -- just to name a few great ideas.

Texas 4-H Members Show Their StarPower

4-H TexasMore than 500 Texas 4-H members have pledged to create 10,000 StarPower greeting cards for families with seriously ill children. Spearheaded by the 4-H clubs in Districts 6 and 7, the program includes 4-H families in every community between San Angelo and El Paso, including the cities of Midland and Odessa.

For a $1 minimum donation, participants decorate a StarPower greeting card and add a message for a seriously ill child. The cards will be delivered to seriously ill children throughout Texas, and each participant will receive a gift code to place his/her star in Starlight’s virtual universe of caring individuals — Site of A Million Stars at www.millionstars.org.

According to Mark Ford, Starlight’s Community Development Officer in Texas, “The enthusiasm and dedication of 4-H members is truly inspiring. They plan to enlist support from friends and neighbors to create thousands of holiday messages for Texas families with seriously ill children. It is a great example of the compassion and extra care that 4-H instills in young people. Their unconditional love and support will touch thousands of hearts this holiday season.”

To help 4-H reach their goal, we invite you to add your own star to one of the 4H Texas galaxies. Simply visit www.millionstars.org and do a keyword search for 4-H. Proceeds will support Starlight programs in Texas.
