Starlight Children’s Foundation today unveiled a state-of-the-art Starlight Fun Center mobile entertainment unit that will brighten the lives of children who are admitted to Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital. The gift was made on behalf of BJ’s Wholesale Club as part of a $500,000 donation from Colgate-Palmolive that will place more than 40 Starlight Fun Centers in pediatric facilities across the US.
Powered by the latest WiiU system from Nintendo, the Starlight Fun Center offers online access to family friendly video games, movies, documentaries, educational content and streaming television programs. Fun Centers roll anywhere indoors to provide seriously ill or injured children and their families with the healing power of play through hours of fun, distraction and a much-needed sense of normalcy while in the hospital.
“Starlight Fun Centers transform the sometimes scary and lonely experience of being in the hospital by providing much-needed moments of laughter, fun and joy for sick children and their families,” said Samantha Martinez, Director of Programs. “We are so grateful to Colgate-Palmolive and their family of brands like the incredible team at BJ’s Wholesale Club for donating a Starlight Fun Center for kids to enjoy at Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital.”
“MUSC Children’s Health and the Child Life program is excited to welcome a Starlight Fun Center to our Atrium playroom.” said Betsy Mcmillan, MA, CCLS, Child Life Manager MUSC Children’s Health. “This unique system allows children to play familiar games, creating opportunities for positive interactions with family or for socialization with other hospitalized children. Medical events can create a sense of decreased control and minimize self-confidence. Play places the child in charge again! Our new Fun Center helps us meet our mission to promote stress free hospital visits! ”
“BJ’s is dedicated to helping children and families thrive, which is why we’re proud to partner with the Starlight Children’s Foundation and Colgate-Palmolive,” said Dawn Albright, general manager of BJ’s Wholesale Club in Summerville, SC. “We’re excited to help bring an experience to the children at MUSC Children’s Hospital that will bring some joy during their stay.”
Doctors, nurses, and child life staff integrate the Starlight Fun Center into physical therapy and other treatments often reducing the need for pain medication, shortening hospital stays and enhancing the overall healing experience for children.
