Drum roll please… the two winners of the 2019 My Starlight Gown contest are Addison and Matilda!
Thank you to everyone who made our 2019 My Starlight Gown contest a success! Thank you to the 2,500 of you who submitted a design, the 3,200 of you who voted on your favorite and of course all five of our finalists, including our three runners up, Julia, Mia, and Mckenzie! A very special thank you to our contest sponsor and longtime supporter, Niagara Cares, for believing in this contest for the second year and helping us deliver happiness to seriously ill kids and their families.
Addison is a twin and at just four months old, she was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. Her mom, Rebecca, calls her a miracle child because doctors told her she would need a heart transplant at an early age. With close monitoring, she has not needed a transplant and is a thriving student and swimmer.
“I made a paint splatter gown because I wanted to make kids in the hospital feel like there is a little color in their lives,” Addison said. “Winning this contest makes me super happy, not just for me, but for the kids in the hospital. I’m excited that they can have a nice colorful gown to wear in the hospital.”
A few months after Matilda’s 15th birthday, doctors found a very rare benign chest tumor and was diagnosed with inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT). She has since undergone surgery to have the tumor removed and spent three weeks at OHSU Doernbecher in Portland, Oregon. She’s currently being treated for IMT.
“As someone who has spent a lot of time in the hospital, and received a Starlight Gown during that time, I know how much of a difference it can make to someone having a really really awful day to know that there are people out there who care and are rooting for you,” Matilda said. “It feels amazing to have something I created play a part in helping other kids who are going through something really hard.”
Addison and Matilda’s designs will be turned into real Starlight Gowns and delivered to hospitalized kids! Plus, thanks to our incredible corporate partner, Nintendo, each winner will receive a Nintendo Switch.
Starlight is also pleased to announce the five winning designs in the Scholastic My Starlight Gown contest, sponsored by Niagara Cares: Ashlyn from Lake Asbury Junior High in Green Cove Springs, Florida created a mermaid and sea creatures gown; Evy from Carl Junction Junior High in Carl Junction, Missouri imagined an intricately flowered ribcage gown; Jaida from Biloxi Junior High in Biloxi, Mississippi designed a sloth gown; Rory from Albertville Middle School in Albertville, Alabama made a musician gown; and Sophia from Lake Park Audubon in Lake Park, Minnesota produced a design featuring baby dragons.
Being a sick kid stuck in the hospital is difficult. Having to wear an old, uncomfortable hospital gown makes it even worse. Starlight Gowns make kids feel like superstars by replacing unattractive, uncomfortable and embarrassing hospital garments with high-quality, comfortable and brightly colored gowns.
Congratulations again to all of our winners who want to bring smiles to seriously ill kids and their families.
The Contest is Over, There is Still Time to Deliver Happiness
