Starlight Hub Privacy Policy

Last Updated: September 2, 2020

Starlight Children’s Foundation (“Starlight”, “we”, “us”, “our”) cares about privacy. We want you to be familiar with how we collect, use, and disclose information that we collect from and about you through the Starlight Hub (https://starlightshop.force.com/StarlightShop/) (the “Site”). The Starlight Hub is available only to health care facilities duly licensed to provide healthcare to children (a “Pediatric Healthcare Facility”). This Privacy Policy does not govern our collection of information offline or through any other website.

We reserve the right to change this Privacy Policy without prior notice. You can determine when this Privacy Policy was last revised by referring to the “Last Updated” legend at the top of this page. Any changes to our Privacy Policy will become effective upon our posting the revised policy on the Site.

1.  What Types of Information Does Starlight Collect From Me?

Starlight gathers two basic types of information through the Site: Personal Information (“PI”) and Other Information. PI is information that identifies you as an individual or relates to an identifiable individual. Other Information is any information that does not reveal your specific identity or does not directly relate to an identifiable individual.

a.   PI. In order for you to register for a Starlight Hub account, you must provide certain PI, such as your name, title, the name of the Pediatric HealthCare Facility you represent, postal address, telephone number, e-mail address, and user name.

b.  Other Information. “Other Information” is any information that does not reveal your specific identity or does not directly relate to an identifiable individual. When you visit and interact with the Site, Starlight and our service providers collect Other Information in a variety of ways, including the following.

(i)             Server Log Files. Your Internet Protocol (IP) address is an identifying number that is automatically assigned to the computer that you are using by your Internet service provider. This number is identified and logged automatically in our server log files whenever you visit the Site, along with the time of your visit and the pages that you visited. We use IP addresses for purposes such as calculating Site usage levels, helping diagnose problems with the Site’s servers, administering the Site, and tracking traffic patterns. We may also derive your approximate location from your IP address.

(ii)           Through Your Browser. We may collect certain environmental variables, such as your MAC address, computer type (such as Windows or Mac), screen resolution, operating system name and version, and Internet browser type and version. We use this information to ensure that the Site functions properly and to optimize your experience.

(iii)          Cookies. Cookies are pieces of information stored directly on the computer you are using. Cookies allow us to collect information such as browser type, time spent on the Site, pages visited, and other traffic information. We use the information for security purposes, to facilitate navigation, to display information more effectively, and to personalize your experience. We also use cookies to gather statistical information about use of the Site in order to continually improve its design and functionality, understand how it is used, and assist us with resolving questions about it. We do not currently respond to browser do-not-track signals. If you do not want information collected through the use of cookies, most browsers allow you to automatically decline cookies or be given the choice of declining or accepting a particular cookie (or cookies) from a particular website. To learn more about cookies, please visit http://www.allaboutcookies.org/. If you choose to decline cookies, you may experience some inconvenience in your use of the Site.

(iv)          Google Analytics. We use Google Analytics, which uses cookies and similar technologies to collect and analyze information about use of the Site and report on activities and trends. This service may also collect information regarding the use of other online services. You can learn about Google’s practices by going to www.google.com/policies/privacy/partners/ and exercise the opt-out provided by Google by downloading the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, available at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

 (v)          Aggregated Information. We may aggregate PI in a manner such that the end-product does not personally identify you or any other user of the Site. For example, we may aggregate information to calculate the percentage of our users who have a particular telephone area code.

2.  How is Information Used?

a.   Personal Information. Starlight may use your PI in the following ways:

(i)  Registering for an Account. When you register through the Site, we use PI to create an account for you.

(ii) Fulfillment of Requests. We use your PI to respond to your inquiries, fulfill your requests, and complete your transactions, as well as to provide you with related customer service. You may also choose to post reviews on the Site.

(iii) Administrative Communications. We may use your PI to send you important information regarding Starlight and/or the Site, or changes to our terms, conditions, and policies. Because this information may be important to your use of the Site, you may not opt out of receiving such communications.

(iv) Other Communications. We may use your PI to create and deliver communications such as our newsletters, surveys, donor-related communications, or other messages. If you prefer that we not send such marketing messages to you, please see the “Opt-Out” section below.

(v)  Internal Business Purposes. We may use your PI for our internal business purposes, such as data analysis, internal reports, audits, fraud and security monitoring, enhancing our products and services, and developing new products and services.

b.  Other Information. Because Other Information does not personally identify you, we may use and disclose it for any purpose, except where we are required to do otherwise under applicable law. If we are required to treat Other Information as PI under applicable law, we may use and disclose it for the purposes for which we use and disclose PI as detailed in this Privacy Policy. If we combine Other Information with PI, we will treat the combined information as PI as long as it is combined.

3.  How is Personal Information Disclosed?

a.  Third-Party Service Providers. We work with third parties who provide services including but not limited to web site hosting, order fulfillment, and data analysis. We share PI about you with these third parties solely to enable them to provide such services.

b.  Assignment. We may disclose or transfer your PI to a third party in connection with any reorganization, sale, assignment, transfer, or other disposition of all or any portion of Starlight’s business or assets.

c.  Law Enforcement; Emergencies; Compliance. We may use or disclose your PI as we believe appropriate: (i) to comply with applicable law; (ii) to comply with legal process or governmental requests; (iii) to enforce the Starlight Hub Terms of Use; (iv) to protect our operations or those of any affiliates; (v) to protect the rights, privacy, safety, or property of Starlight, its affiliates, you, or others; and (vi) to permit us to pursue available remedies or limit the damages that we may sustain.

4.  Other Important Notes Regarding Our Privacy Practices

a.   Security. We seek to have reasonable security measures in place designed to protect PI under our control. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as perfect security in an online environment. As a result, we cannot ensure the security of any information you transmit to us through or in connection with the Site or that is stored by us. If you have reason to believe that your interaction with us is no longer secure (for example, if you feel that the security of your account has been compromised), please immediately notify us in accordance with the “Contacting Us” section below.

b.  Third-Party Sites. The Site may contain links to third-party websites. These linked sites are not under Starlight’s control, and we are not responsible for the privacy or other practices of any such site. We provide such links only as a convenience, and the inclusion of a link on the Site does not imply endorsement of the linked site by Starlight.

c.  Opt-out. If you do not wish to receive donor-related or marketing-related e-mails from us, you may opt out of receiving such e-mails by following the opt-out instructions in any such e-mail you receive. We will endeavor to comply with your request as soon as reasonably practicable.

d.  Accessing, Changing, or Removing PI. We provide you with options for reviewing, correcting, updating, or deleting PI that you have provided to us:

(i) You may sign into your account to view or edit your PI.

(ii) You may also submit a request to change or delete your PI by emailing us at programs@starlight.org or mailing us at Starlight Children’s Foundation, Attention: Webmaster, 400 Corporate Pointe, Suite 590, Culver City, CA, 90230. We strive to comply with all reasonable requests. For your protection, we may need to verify your identity before making any changes to or deleting PI. In your request, please clearly indicate the PI that you wish to have changed or that you wish to have PI about you removed from our database. Please note that we may need to retain certain information for record-keeping purposes, and there may also be residual information that will remain within our databases and other records. Finally, we are not responsible for removing information from the databases of third parties with whom we have already shared PI about you.

e.   Jurisdictional Issues. The Site is controlled and operated by Starlight from the United States and is not intended to subject Starlight to the laws or jurisdiction of any state, country, or territory other than that of the United States. Your PI may be stored and processed in any country where we have facilities or in which we engage service providers, and, by using the Site, you understand that your PI may be transferred to countries outside of your country of residence, including the United States, which may have data protection rules that are different from those of your country. Starlight does not represent or warrant that the Site or any part thereof is appropriate or available for use in any particular jurisdiction. Those who choose to access the Site do so in their own initiative and are responsible for complying with all applicable local laws, rules, and regulations.

f.   Contacting Us. You may contact us at programs@starlight.org. Because e-mail communications are not necessarily secure, please do not include credit card or other sensitive information in your email correspondence with us.
