Arg! Captain Lukas Reports for Duty
Play is Essential to Care
For most kids navigating a serious illness, a week in the hospital means a week of waiting. Waiting for test results, waiting for the next treatment, and waiting to go home.
Lukas was admitted to the hospital for a routine procedure that unexpectedly led to a biopsy surgery. His mom was with him every day, noticing how play is essential to care.

Joyrides and Pirate Ships
When Lukas took a joyride in a Starlight Radio Flyer Hero Wagon, throughout the hospital multiple times a day, his favorite thing was to tease his mom’s wagon driving. “Mama is a bad driver!” Lukas would say.
Their wagon rides became a silly and happy memory. “He still talks about how mama can’t drive the wagon!” Jessica, his mom shares.
Another time, Lukas discovered a pirate ship at the nurses’ station – a wooden wheel, gold detailing – the whole thing. In his hospital gown, Lukas ran laps around the ship shouting, “Arg!”
Captain Lukas was ready to report for duty!
When Lukas played, he used his imagination in the hospital to be a pirate. He wasn’t thinking about being there.
He was just having fun and being a kid.
Play is a thread that connects a child to who they are outside the hospital — to their happiness, their imagination and their sense of self inside the hospital.
Research has long told us what parents already know intuitively: play reduces anxiety, lowers the perception of pain, and helps children process experiences that are too big for words.
For Lukas, play did all of that — and it gave his mom something too.
Moments to laugh. Moments to cherish. Moments to see her son happy.

Help Children Heal Through Play
At Starlight, we believe Healing Begins with Happiness™. That’s why play is an essential part of care, because when children feel safe, supported and engaged, healing can truly begin.
Pediatric hospital play programs like these are widely valued, but hospitals rely on donor support to provide them to kids. Insurance and families are never billed for the critical resource.
Without your help, children may miss out on this essential care.
Help kids play in pediatric hospitals.
