How does a three-year-old find the courage for pokes, procedures, and hospital stays that can last up to a week?

Eliazar, nine months into leukemia treatment, has a plan, and Starlight gets to be a big part of it. His care team calls him "just a bright light." Watch how he prepares for treatment, and the important role programs that provide play are a part of his care.

Watch Eliazar's Story

How medical play helps kids prepare for procedures

Kids don't just hold a bear. They give it a job: protector, friend, someone to be brave with. When Eliazar gives Larry his "pokies" first, he knows what to expect when it's his turn.

And on days his legs need a rest, the Hero Wagon keeps him exploring the halls. Play gives kids a say in their hospital stays, and that helps them show up more ready for treatment.

Why comfort items help kids in the hospital

A soft teddy bear gives kids comfort when they can't find the right words. It's often the first thing they see when they wake up, something to hug on the way to surgery, and a place to put their worries while they wait.

What the science says about play

Play is a real part of care. Research shows play has real therapeutic value for seriously ill kids

  • Being ready for procedures: Medical play and having a favorite toy help kids get through needles, dressing changes, and port access with more confidence.

  • Kids feel calmer and braver. In fact, 82% of healthcare providers say that Starlight Toy Deliveries make the patient experience better by reducing fear and bringing joyful distractions.

  • Moving around gives kids a sense of accomplishment, which is one of Starlight's Happiness and Healing Pillars.

  • Play helps build stronger connections between kids, their families, and the care teams.

Happiness, delivered

In 2025, Starlight programs reached 3.2 million children in hospitals across the U.S. That means 3.2 million kids had something to hold, a way to explore, and a reason to smile. Also, 89% of healthcare staff say Starlight programs help them teach kids coping skills.

Thanks to donors, Starlight provides toys, Hero Wagons, and more to over 800 hospitals at no cost. Care teams see the benefits: comfort gifts help kids feel less afraid and more willing to get the treatment they need .
