The Halloween Happiness Levi Needed to Endure

Five-year-old Levi is bubbly, enjoys dancing, and most of all, loves Halloween.

He and his mom, Chelsea, listen to the song “Spooky, Scary Skeletons” at least once a day. Every day he thinks about who he will dress up to be on Halloween – will he be a Ghostbuster again?

Levi's love for Halloween showed up for him in a different way – during hospital stays.

The Best Halloween Gifts Levi Could Ask For

Levi was born with dextrocardia and pulmonary atresia, meaning his heart is flipped backwards and on the right side of his chest and blood couldn’t flow from part of his heart to his lungs.

This led to a long journey of hospital stays and visits for Levi and Chelsea, including five open-heart surgeries and a heart transplant when Levi was three years old. Many times, he happened to be hospitalized in October as they geared up for his favorite holiday.

Through the Starlight Families program, Levi received Halloween toys and gowns he could take to the hospital with him, ensuring he still could experience the spirit of Halloween in the hospital.

Confidence and Comfort in Gowns and Toys

Levi has always loved Ghostbusters. His favorite character is the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, and he feels giddy watching Slimer eating hot dogs. Levi loves singing Ghostbusters songs, and he dressed up as a Ghostbuster one Halloween.

That’s why it meant the world to him when he received a Starlight Ghostbusters-themed Hospital Gown and Toys. Levi lit up seeing his gown, and Chelsea had “never seen him so happy.”

Wearing the gown gave Levi a confidence boost to be courageous during painful blood draws.  Other times, Chelsea always made sure Levi had his Ghostbusters toys to make a hard day a little easier.

“I would say to Levi, ‘You’re a Ghostbuster now, you’ve got to be brave’. Then he would stick his arm out to get poked as if he was saying, ‘I got this.’ Whereas before he was very timid and scared.”

Help Hospitalized Kids Embrace Tricks and Treats

Halloween is a core childhood experience, and all families deserve to create positive memories they won’t forget.

Letting hospitalized kids experience the joys of childhood is everything. Chelsea says it best:

“Levi’s happiness from the gown and toys was just one of those moments I wished I could pause forever. Seeing him so happy and thrilled over something instead of dealing with blood sticks, casting and echoes was just amazing. It's indescribable.”
