Comfort to Endure: Shaldon’s Special Hospital Gown

On May 14th, 2024, Shaldon was taken to the emergency room because he was lethargic and had a fever for the past few days. He had a 104-degree fever, but the doctors didn’t know what was causing it.

That next day, Tatiana, Shaldon’s Mom, awoke to see Shaldon seizing and not breathing. She and her husband instantly called 911 while performing CPR to get him to breathe again. On the ride to the hospital, he began to have non-stop seizures and was placed into an induced coma, the start of his long-term hospital stay. Shaldon was later diagnosed with a rare epileptic condition called febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES). There is no definitive information on how to treat his condition.

At one point, Shaldon was having more than 150 seizures a day.

Now, over a year later, he’s doing better but still requires care 24/7. Shaldon and his family are continuing to face the daily challenges that come with serious illnesses.

“He’s completely machine dependent, wheelchair dependent,” shares Tatiana.

Still, community support has brought moments of comfort and joy to Shaldon’s family. One of these moments came when Shaldon received a Starlight character-themed kids Hospital Gown. Unlike standard gowns, Starlight Gowns are more vibrant, colorful and designed to let kids express themselves at no cost to families.

Shaldon wearing his Starlight Hospital Gown brought comfort to his mom:

“It meant a lot to me, I’ve been battling with not seeing ‘him’ since he’s been admitted,” says Tatiana. “Seeing him in a gown with such definition and character gave me a warm feeling.”

When families are facing their toughest moments, a moment of comfort can be the warm hug they need to keep enduring, keep hoping, and keep persevering.

A serious illness changes everything for a family — but with your help, so can a single moment of happiness.
