A Heart Transplant Story: Changing What Waiting Felt Like

Unexpected moments of connection and positivity changed what hospitalization felt like for 12-year-old Renley.

Living with a congenital heart defect, she waited for a heart transplant for 145 days. Unable to leave her room and facing boredom, the hospital staff, with the support of Starlight programs, delivered much-needed happiness to her.

When Waiting Felt Like Fun

The hardest part of the hospital isn’t always the pokes and tests. Sometimes, it’s the empty stretches in between. When nothing happens except the clock moving, the day can feel hard to get through.

That’s why it made such a difference when a nurse rolled a Starlight Gaming Station into Renley’s room.

Renley’s dad was right beside her, playing LEGO Batman. For a child, normalcy means finding small moments that still feel like them.

The moment she and her dad played video games, she could feel like a kid again and not just a patient.

The gaming station gave her the perfect opportunity to enjoy time with her dad. It was new, different and interactive, but met her where she needed to be.

Waiting is always easier when having fun. For Renley, that meant connecting with her dad and being entertained in the middle of a hard day. It’s just one way support showed up for when she needed it.

What Kept Riley Walking? The Compliments that Unlocked Endurance

Before a transplant, building endurance matters. That means walking hospital halls, even on days when every step feels heavy. For Renley, those walks became a little bit easier in a Starlight Hospital Gown. The nurses couldn’t help but comment on Renley’s Disney-themed gowns. As she walked down halls dressed like her favorite Disney Princesses, she looked like true royalty.

The nurses’ kind words motivated Renley to keep walking, even when it was hard.

The compliments make her feel so special. It’s an encouragement to Renley to keep walking and build endurance.

A few kind words and her favorite princesses were enough to turn a hard task into something Renley enjoyed.

An Adaptive Gown that Finally Fit Her Needs – And Why it Mattered

Starlight Gowns have snaps on the shoulders - a detail that matters more than it sounds.

As part of her care, Renley had continuous medication through a PICC line. She also took steroids, which made her stomach swollen.

Her gowns’ special design made it easier for her mom to access her lines, while still providing more coverage and privacy than traditional hospital gowns.

The Starlight hospital gown is the only one that really meets our needs. The snapping sleeves are PERFECT!

When Renley was in the hospital, she continued to receive support helping her through each day.

Her experience is a reminder that even in the toughest times, small moments of comfort make all the difference.
