Triton Gaming Esports Team Delivers Happiness to Kids
University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego)’s Esports team, also known as Triton Gaming, have partnered with Starlight Children’s Foundation to make a lasting impact on kids in their community.
The charity and college esports team have rallied around a common goal – ensuring seriously ill kids can experience happiness from gaming even from their hospital beds.
Both organizations understand the importance and impact of gaming – whether that’s a positive distraction from a tough situation, a way to laugh and bond with friends or a way to challenge one’s critical thinking skills.
Gaming for Charity: Tritons Give Back
As a part of Stream for Starlight, Triton Gaming has been committed to fundraising to place Starlight Gaming programs at hospitals for kids. The team held a kick-off gaming event last November which featured a tournament for a variety of games including Valorant, Overwatch, League of Legends and Rocket League. The event was livestreamed on Twitch and raised $2500!
Triton Gaming members Katelyn Yu and Liam Kerslake speak about why the team fundraises for Starlight.
To impact kids in their local community, Triton Gaming directed the funds to place a Starlight Gaming Handheld, powered by Nintendo, at the UC San Diego medical center. With this resource, hospital staff can take the portable gaming console to patients when they aren’t able to leave their rooms or while they’re getting treatment.
Instead of feeling bored, lonely or anxious, kids can find a sense of distraction, comfort and play. Some are even having so much fun that they forget they’re getting chemotherapy while it’s happening.
Triton Gaming is taking their impact even further. To help reach their goal to fundraise $3,200, Starlight will be the benefiting charity of the annual Triton Expo at UC San Diego on May 30-31st, 2026.
Impact videos of Starlight families who have found happiness and hope through the charity’s support will be displayed throughout the event.

Make a Difference for Kids in Need
Why do you love to game? Maybe it’s because it helps you connect with friends, it’s simply fun to play, or it’s a distraction to get through tough times.
Seriously ill kids are looking for that same connection, play and distraction. When they should be experiencing those joys of being a kid, they’re fighting the toughest battle of their lives.
Still, kids don’t have to face it alone – with your help.
When you fundraise through Stream for Starlight, you’re helping them experience happiness when they need it most.
