Thanks to a generous donation provided by Northwestern University Dance Marathon (NUDM), Starlight and Children’s Hospital University Illinois (CHUI) have opened a newly renovated kid-friendly playroom.
In partnership with NUDM, which raised more than $1 million at its 41st annual dance marathon in 2015, Starlight is supporting the renovation or building of 11 healing environments at nine separate locations in the Chicago-land area. On Friday, March 4, representatives from Starlight and NUDM joined kids, families and hospital staff to celebrate the new space with a special unveiling ceremony.
The refurbished playroom is enhanced with fresh paint, new lighting and cabinets, comfortable furniture, a state-of-the art gaming system and audiovisual equipment, a built-in dollhouse, a Lego wall, an area specially designed for infants and a dishwasher to sanitize toys, among other modern amenities. The space was also upgraded for easier access by patients with physical disabilities so they are able enjoy the room with their families and fellow patients.
Since 1990, Starlight has worked with donors like NUDM and community partners such as Children’s Hospital University Illinois to transform interior and exterior environments into colorful, entertaining oases that can be enjoyed by young patients and their families. For kids and teens experiencing long-hospital stays or undergoing medical treatments, these beautifully-designed and well-equipped spaces stir the imagination, ease stress and assist in the overall healing process.
If you would like to help brighten the lives of seriously ill children, you can donate today. Your gift combined with the gift of others helps turn pain, fear and stress into laughter, fun and joy – because a sick kid is still a kid at heart.
