How Resilient Judah Manages Sickle Cell Pain Crises at Home

Judah has been living with sickle cell anemia since he was one year old.

His journey since then has consisted of multiple hospital stays as well as understanding his diagnosis and how to navigate living with it.

Living with sickle cell is not easy for Judah.

Judah's Village of Support

Thankfully, Judah and Connie have had community support as they navigate these challenges.

“Judah has a village behind him to help him,” shared Connie.

One source of support has been the resources and programs Judah has received through the Starlight Families program, which bridges the gap between hospital stays and at-home care.

As a Starlight Family, Judah received Starlight Toy Deliveries that brought happiness and excitement while distracting him when he was experiencing a sickle cell crisis at home.

For kids like Judah, who live with sickle cell anemia, playing with toys can help them practice mindfulness or engage their mind to focus on something other than pain.

With these tools, they can cope and persevere with happy moments to brighten their days.

Empower Kids with Tools to Cope

Thanks to local heroes like you, Judah received these resources free of cost through Starlight.

Still, our work is not done.

Approximately 1800 babies are born with sickle cell anemia each year.

Through multiple hospital stays and pain crises, kids need these sickle cell resources to cope and persevere

To other families navigating living with sickle cell, Connie advises to communicate with the medical team, stay on top of medication and hydration and, “just hold on.”

Just hold on.
