Providing Pediatric Wilms Tumor Patients Emotional Support

Four-year-old Georgia was diagnosed with Wilms tumor (kidney cancer) when she was two years old.

From then on, Georgia became a frequent visitor to Goryeb Morriston Children’s Hospital in Lincoln Park, New Jersey, for scans, blood work, and IVs. Today, Georgia is 21 months post-treatment, and still goes to the hospital for her scans, bloodwork, and IV every three months. Georgia often feels nervous during hospital visits, and her mom, Gina, feels mixed emotions. Her mom explains:

“I am always anxious and worried - though she is in great hands. I hate that my kid has to go through it all.”

In the hospital, Georgia works with the Child Life team, who provides emotional support through play-centered distraction therapies. As a continuation of care at home, Starlight's Families program continues to provide resources that ease her emotions. Through this program, Georgia received resources to help ease her emotional and mental state, including Starlight Toy Deliveries. Georgia received art supplies and a magazine that she brings with her often and reads while waiting.

The items we have received have elucidated some of the sadness that comes with a diagnosis.

Georgia becomes more motivated to endure days of cancer treatments and procedures with these types of distraction therapies.

“It helps her get through the days of tests.” - Gina, Georgia’s mom.
